Why are most bands soft or getting softer? in the mainstream btw.?

back in the day we had a mix of hard rock/metal bands, in addition to softer poppy ones but now most of the main stream music is soft or poppy not much heavy/hard rock to balance it out. idk mabye american idol has somthing to do wih it lol
