How can i make my drawings of people look more realistic?

i seem to butcher the proportions of the body and usually opt for the easier stick figure. my people end up looking like square manniquins or frankenstein's monsters. i have exceptional hand-writing and great writing skills, but i can't seem to translate the images i visualize in my head on to paper.
